An ancient metalworking technique, cloisonée enamel is accomplished by creating compartments on a metal surface by soldering thin strips of silver or gold to it. This separates the different colours of enamel to create a mosaic effect. Enamel powder is carefully placed in the compartments and it is then fired in a kiln.
