Two weeks after the star-studded Golden Globes and with a month to go before the Oscars, Hollywood yesterday played host to the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The only televised awards show to exclusively honour performers, they might not be as glitzy as the Golden Globes or as revered as the Oscars, but the SAGs, as they are affectionately known, still provide the perfect opportunity to do some serious haute joaillerie spotting.
Vamping it up in a black gown was Brit actress Michelle Dockery, who had clearly fallen for the snake-like charms of Bulgari's Serpenti jewels - she wore Serpenti earrings, two Serpenti bracelets and a pair of Serpenti rings in yellow and rose gold, all set with spectacular gemstones. She didn't deviate with her choice of clutch bag either: a Bulgari Serpenti black enamel minaudiere.
Winner of the coveted Best Actress award, fresh-faced Jennifer Lawrence transcended her years in Dior Haute Couture and some very grown-up Chopard jewels: a multi-shape necklace in platinum, set with 38ct of diamonds, emerald-cut diamond studs and a diamond ring featuring 9ct of brilliant-cut white diamonds set in 18ct white gold. And with her chic, dark bob, SAG nominee Marion Cotillard looked unrecognisable from the Golden Globes just a fortnight ago. She also stepped out in some heavyweight Chopard, including a round and marquise-cut diamond necklace weighing in at 54ct and a dainty Chopard timepiece.
In classic understated style, Naomi Watts got one of the biggest thumbs up of the night for her side-swept hair, elegant vintage gown and impressive Fabergé Clover earrings. Emeralds are all set to be the gemstone of 2013, so she gets a special round of applause for her choice of ring: a Fabergé Solyanka Emerald Cabochon, with a central 13.63ct emerald, ethically sourced from Gemfields' Zambian mines. In similarly polished style, nominee and presenter Jessica Chastain wore an exquisite 'Splash' necklace from the Water by Harry Winston Collection.
Julianne Moore has never made a red-carpet faux pas and, true to form, she didn't put a foot wrong in monochrome Chanel Couture, accessorised with vintage Van Cleef & Arpels. We can't decide which diamond-studded piece we like best, the 1970 Feuilles earrings from the Van Cleef & Arpels Private Collection, the 1921 Art Deco bracelet, also from the Private Collection, or the Vintage bracelet from the Heritage Collection, dating back to 1951.
Finally, some said Rose Byrne's look was a miss, but not us. What's not to love about her dreamy Valentino gown, immaculate wavy hair, pink lipstick and not one but two Van Cleef & Arpels rings in white gold, worn on adjacent fingers: a Hortense ring, set with a huge emerald-cut aquamarine and, nestled directly next to it, a pretty, bow-shaped Décolleté ring?
