Celebrities flocked to New York on 6 May for the annual Costume Institute Gala, known as the Met Ball - one of fashion's most hotly anticipated occasions.

Held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, invitations to this year's event came with a rather unusual theme - Punk: Chaos to Couture - and the stars got suitably dressed up in black and red, leather and lace, topped with spiky 'dos and studs galore. Despite the anarchic vibe, however, this was an evening hosted by 'Vogue' and its well-groomed Editor Anna Wintour, so this was one impossibly stylish parade of punks.

The guests certainly didn't disappoint with their jewels. Harry Winston, Chanel, Bulgari and Brazilian jeweller Jack Vartanian all sparkled on wrists, necks and ears, turning the red carpet into a dazzling carat-parade of layered bracelets, dainty tiaras and statement rings.

Christina Ricci accessorised her tartan Vivienne Westwood gown with 113ct of Harry Winston jewels, including 'Diamond Nightlife' earrings, 'Diamond Caftan' bracelet and a 'Diamond 5-row' bracelet. Heidi Klum's diamond studs and bracelet were also courtesy of Harry Winston, as was model Linda Evangelista's fabulous 'Lily Cluster' diamond tiara.

Chanel was choice outfitter and jeweller for many, including Diane Kruger and musician Grimes, though it was Bella Heathcote who stood out most, sporting not only a Chanel couture dress but six pieces of the French maison's diamond jewels, including a 'Plume de Chanel' ring, bracelet and earrings, a '1932' ring, a 'Ciel Etoilé' bracelet and a 'Ruban Couture' bracelet.

Actress Maggie Gylenhaal wore Bulgari, matching her plunging red Calvin Klein gown with a 'Ubogas' choker and 'Tubogas' bracelet, both from Bulgari's Heritage Collection. The brand's Serpenti collection was also spotted on the red carpet, as worn by actresses Jaime King and Emma Roberts.

American actress Emma Roberts arrived with a streak of blue in her hair and a wrist full of gold bangles, including a Baccarat crystal bracelet. And despite all the dazzling, this was a night for independent designers too. Jessica Alba played the part of punk-princess perfectly, pairing her leather Thory Burch dress with snaking Jack Vartanian ear cuffs, while the actress and singer-songwriter Emmy Rossum went pretty punk in a floaty white gown and edgy perforated ring by OritDesign.

With no safety pins or ripped T-shirts in sight, the 2013 Met Ball was more beauty than bondage, proving punk certainly isn't dead.
