The Golden Globes in Los Angeles kicked off the awards season with a triumph for ethical and sustainable jewellery.
Cate Blanchett, winner of the Golden Globe for Best Actress, stepped onto the red carpet wearing Chopard's Green Carpet Collection floral diamond earrings, made with Fairmined gold from small-scale mines in South America and set with diamonds sourced from the IGC Group and certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC). In short, Cate Blanchett was wearing the squeakiest-clean jewels ever to make an appearance at the Golden Globes.
The Green Carpet Collection of jewels by Swiss jeweller Chopard are the fruit of a collaboration with Livia Firth's Eco-Age, the team that set up the Green Carpet Challenge, which enlists celebrities to wear sustainable and ethical clothes, jewels and accessories to high-profile events.
Through the Green Carpet Challenge, Chopard is the first jeweller to establish a partnership with the NGO Alliance for Responsible Mining that helps source the gold. Since early 2013, Chopard has been working with Eco-Age to develop the Green Carpet Collection jewels. Co-founder of Chopard Caroline Scheufele hopes that by setting an example, the luxury industry will take up the challenge of looking for ways to make jewellery ecologically and socially sustainable.
The first Green Carpet Collection of jewels were debuted at Cannes last year when Marion Cotillard wore white gold cuff and earrings to the premiere of 'Blood Ties' at the film festival (read more here).
Continuing the tradition, last September actress Virginie Ledoyen wore a 43ct diamond Green Carpet Collection necklace at the Venice Film Festival (read more here).
