This week we met with Monique Péan at the Couture Show Las Vegas, where she introduced us to her new Mineraux collection of ethical engagement rings.
Inspired by the search for the perfect engagement ring for her own nuptials, the collection brings to life the tradition of "something old, something new", encompassing 20 unique engagement rings made from recycled platinum and gold, set with antique diamonds.
With gems hand cut into shapes such as the trillion, waterfall and rose cut, the collection looks distinctly modern and will appeal to brides who are looking for a ring that stands out in a sea of identikit solitaires.
Each stone is encircled with micro pavé diamonds, which further emphasises the cut and colour of the central gem. In subtle colour combinations, Péan pairs diamonds in grey, white champagne, yellow and black with bands of recycled platinum, rose gold, yellow gold and white gold.
"It was important to me to design and create pieces that highlight the true brilliance and distinct nature of each diamond. I wanted to add novelty and modernity to an otherwise traditional and symbolic piece of jewellery," says Péan of the new line.
Available exclusively at Barneys New York, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of Péan's engagement rings will go to the National Center for Transgender Equality and the NYC LGBT Community Center, and will also benefit the designer's collaboration with charity: water, which funds water wells and purification systems.
The latest launch will solidify Péan's reputation as one of the most prominent ethical jewellers to emerge in recent years. A former analyst at Goldman Sachs, she launched her eponymous line seven years ago after the unexpected death of her sister prompted a career change.
Using only recycled metals and antique or conflict-free diamonds, Péan puts social and environmental responsibility at the heart of her designs. She travels the world to seek out new artisans and new materials to work with, from Peru and French Polynesia to Norway and Alaska.
Her dedication and stunning designs have been recognised by the industry through accolades such as the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards, the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation Award and the Tiffany & Co Development Grant.
