Chopard has once again used a glittering awards ceremony to highlight its commitment to creating red carpet-worthy jewellery with an ethical backbone.
At the Baftas 2014, held at the Royal Opera House in London, the Swiss jeweller revealed the latest addition to its Green Carpet Collection: an elaborate pair of diamond drop earrings set in Fairmined gold. Worn by French actress Léa Seydoux, a Bafta Rising Star nominee for her role in 'Blue Is the Warmest Colour', the earrings are the fifth Green Carpet jewel to be worn on the red carpet in less than a year.
"By choosing to wear Chopard jewels for the Baftas, Léa is supporting a profound and dynamic shift toward sustainable luxury that affects change right at the beginning of the supply chain among artisanal miners, "says founder of Eco-Age and the Green Carpet Challenge, Livia Firth. Livia has been collaborating with Chopard on the Green Carpet Collection since the first jewels were launched at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013.
Chopard's partnership with the Green Carpet Challenge became global news last year when French actress Marion Cotillard made her red carpet entrance at the Cannes Film Festival in a high jewellery bracelet and earrings made from Fairmined gold. Actress Virginie Ledoyen followed suit in September at the Venice Film Festival in a Green Carpet Collection necklace in Fairmined white gold and diamonds. And in January of this year, Cate Blanchett became the third star to send out a powerful ethical message to the world when she took home a Golden Globe wearing Chopard's Green Carpet Collection laurel earrings.
With Cate nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars, which are less than a fortnight away, will we see a new Green Carpet Collection jewel on the most high-profile red carpet of them all? Chopard is keeping its lips firmly sealed but I have a hunch we just might.
