The stars usually show an element of restraint with their jewels on day one of the Cannes Film Festival, and yesterday was no different.
But while the front-page-worthy frocks, and corresponding jewels, are clearly being reserved for premieres later in the week, there were still some interesting jewellery choices on the red carpet, even if colourful gemstones were noticeably absent.
All eyes were on Nicole Kidman, whose latest film, 'Grace of Monaco', opened the festival. Her heavily embellished Armani gown was the perfect choice for the leading lady of the day, paired with an equally ornate Harry Winston Caftan diamond bracelet.
I loved actress Laetitia Casta's look, which stood out among a sea of monochrome gowns. Pretty in palest pink Christian Dior Couture, she accessorised with a diamond bracelet from Chaumet's 12 Vendome collection, which draped downwards like an exotic hand jewel.
Chandelier-style earrings were everywhere, from 'Blue is the Warmest Colour' actress Adele Exarchopoulos in stunning 38ct Chopard drop earrings to model Heidi Kloss in the latest addition to Chopard's Green Carpet Collection, sparkling with pear, round and marquise-shaped diamonds.
Chopard chose the first day of the Cannes Film Festival 2014 to reinforce the ethical message it has been sending out over the past year. At the 2013 festival the Swiss jeweller unveiled its first jewels in the Green Carpet Collection, made from Fairmined gold and created in collaboration with Livia Firth, founder of Eco-Age. Ever since, these squeaky-clean jewels have been making regular appearances on high-profile red carpets around the world, with both Heidi Kloss and Caroline Scheufele, co-president of Chopard, both opting to go green on day one of Cannes.
One of the only concessions to colour on the first, diamond-drenched day was Jane Fonda, who wore red from head to toe, including a pair of rubellite drop earrings from Chopard's Temptations Collection.

Winner of the Trophée Chopard 2014, which honours the talents of a young actor and actress by naming them Best Male and Female Newcomer of the year, is Adele Exarchopoulos, who wore diamond chandelier-style diamond earrings and two diamond rings by Chopard on the Cannes 2014 red carpet on day one of the festival.
