There is no question that Milan, like Tokyo, is one of the global capitals of design and innovation. This spirit of excellence in creativity is captured in Pomellato’s visually arresting new exhibition: From Milan to Tokyo.

Through Pomellato jewels and other Milanese design icons, the exhibition brings to life the quintessential refinement of Milanese Style alongside its centuries-old dedication to fine craftsmanship.

Pomellato CEO Sabina Belli explains: ‘The exhibition brings to Japan a celebration of Milanese style. Tokyo, like Milan, is an elegant, generous city where design meets fashion, craftsmanship and innovation. Milan is a city that has made its quest for quality and beauty its distinctive characteristic. Pomellato was founded in Milan in 1967 and since then our jewels embody the marvellous spirit of this city, its independent nature and its joyous personality.’

From designers such as Gio Ponti to Ettore Sottsass, Piero Fornasetti and the seminal architects of the city including Aldo Rossi, Milan is obsessed with design. And when great design meets great makers, the magic happens. Look no further than the Duomo or a Pomellato jewel for confirmation, testament to the city’s ability to attract the best craftsmen both yesterday and today.

Pomellato, Milan’s most prestigious jewellery house, sits exactly in this sweet spot, where contemporary creativity meets excellence in workmanship. The house’s three pivotal strengths: creativity, craftsmanship and elegance are explored in enthralling immersive displays of the world of Pomellato.

Juxtaposing Milanese design icons with the house’s signature jewels is a design guru’s dream and neatly highlights the creativity of the jeweller. Gio Ponti’s SuperLeggera chair sits next to the smooth lines of the Iconica jewel family. The colourful and unconventional Nudo finds itself next to Alessandro Mendini’s Proust armchair.  The Catene collection finds synergies with Michael Anastassiades Arrangements Lamp of lighting that resembles chains.

Pomellato’s living heritage of manufacturing skills is evoked here through photographs of jewels. Pomellato exhibition: From Milan to Tokyo at the Tokyo Jing exhibition space from 21 to 30 October 2022.

Pomellato’s living heritage of manufacturing skills is evoked through photographs of jewels being made by the hands of the talented men and women who craft each jewel in the Milanese workshop. Alongside this display of mastery are the finished results in the form of ravishing high jewellery masterpieces, each the culmination of thousands of hours of work. A recording of gold being hand-hammered is an echoing reminder of the human element, at the heart of each creation.

Curated by Alba Cappellieri, the exhibition is set in the lofty post industrial ambiance of the Tokyo Jing Space and is open to the public from 21 to 30 October 2022.

The final area is pays homage to the mystique of Milanese elegance, that sotto voce sophistication of whispered elegance where less is more.  Two of Milan’s favourite meeting places are recreated in an interior courtyard garden and the lavish La Scala theatre, those special places where the élite reveal their exquisite taste.

Alba Cappellieri, Chair of Jewelry Design at the Politecnico di Milano, curates the exhibition. Cappellieri says: ‘Milan is one of the few cities that is currently an international capital of both fashion and design. This is thanks to its inclusiveness, where the past can exist alongside the future, where both craftsmanship and professionalism are valued and beauty meets elegance. Milan unites opposites and values differences. As this exhibition shows, Pomellato expresses the values and spirit of Milan.’
