EDITOR'S REVIEW
Panerai's Luminor model first appeared in 1950 and was designed as a professional military dive watch, created to meet the strict requirements imposed by the Italian Navy and its elite commando of human torpedoes. The hallmark crown-protecting device designed to keep the movement sealed to depths of up to 300 metres is still going strong, as is the minimalist aesthetic of the black dial with luminous numerals and hour markers, the small seconds counter at 9 o'clock, and its extraordinary power reserve. Panerai developed and executed its P.5000 movement - a hand-wound mechanical movement that keeps the hours, minutes and small seconds ticking for eight days. The caseback of the 44mm steel case is engraved with the famous Italian frogmen straddled on a submersible torpedo.
