One of the world's premier gemstone producers, Gemfields is also a driving force in ethically sourced precious stones. About 20% of the world's emeralds come from Gemfields' Zambian mine, which adheres to strict fair trade, environmental, social and safety best practices. The company also owns an amethyst mine, plus a newly acquired ruby mine, but it was those trademark emeralds that caught the eye of award-winning jewellery designer Shaun Leane. In collaboration with Gemfields, he created The Serpent's Trace necklace, which features a stunning, ethically sourced Gemfields emerald surrounded by brilliant diamond accents. Just like Leane's designs, it is individuality that makes emeralds so unique. There is no such thing as a perfectly unflawed emerald, since each stone has its own 'garden' of inclusions and flaws. Like an individual passport, gemmologists can use them to trace a stone back to its original mine.
