EDITOR'S REVIEW
Sailing boats and mechanical watch movements depend on man’s ability to harness natural power and watches designed for maritime pursuits and sea dogs are always a popular category. Ulysse Nardin’s Grand Deck Marine Tourbillon watch comes with a wooden deck on the dial that almost creaks with realism. This highly original watch features a patented device allowing a boom to indicate the retrograde minutes placed in the centre of the dial. The blue aluminium boom is pulled by a thin wire which is threaded through four winches placed on the wooden deck. The jumping hours are clearly indicated in a double window just below 12 o’clock and to counter the effects of gravity a 60-second flying tourbillon decorated with an anchor enlivens the action on the deck. Housed in a 44mm white gold case, the movement of this extraordinary watch is equipped with two barrels, one for timekeeping functions and the second to power the complication. Water-resistant to 100 metres, the Grand Deck Marine Tourbillon is a limited edition of 18 pieces all presented on an alligator strap with a white gold folding buckle.
