|Maria Doulton: One of my favourite places at Baselworld is DeLaneau, and here in these containers, which is what they are, they have recreated their little world, complete with an enamelling atelier, as well as all the watches that they're showing for the year.
DeLaneau has always been inspired by animals, and this year they've chosen some unusual creatures. The one that really caught my eye is this jellyfish watch, and this dial, through various types of enamel, including plique-à-jour, paillonné, miniature painting, and of course grand feu enamelling, catches that translucent quality of the deep sea and the lightness of a jellyfish as it floats through the water.
DeLaneau adds to its range of translucent watches with new colours of enamel. Now, these watches; although the dials aren't as highly ornate as some of the other ones, they do have this pretty rippling effect, and that's created by first of all making a guilloché or engine-turned pattern on the base of the dial, and then covering it with layers of grand feu enamel in different colours. One of the new colours this year is right on trend, and it's an opaline effect; it's a sort of heathery violet-grey colour that shimmers with each movement.
