Christie's Dubai sale offers an interesting array of jewels with some stunning outsized pieces and lots of colour. Our jewellery expert casts an eye over the offerings. It is interesting to see the difference of goods sold at this Dubai Important Jewels sale and at other auctions across the world. Think lots of long tassel earrings as well as modern jewels, such as the huge titanium ear pendants (lot 28) that are all of 11 cm long. And titanium allows for a big look that doesn't weigh a ton. Lot 42 is a multi-gem cocktail ring that looks like a polka dot extravaganza. It is huge and everything moves. Lot 62 is a fantastic opal necklace of three rows of graduated opal beads with an early Art Deco clasp mounted with a square-shaped pink tourmaline surrounded by millegrain-set rose-cut diamonds. I also noticed that there is lots of rubellite and pink tourmalines; like Lot 63, a tourmaline and diamond necklace. And for this market that really understand pearls, Lot 71 is an eight strand natural pearl necklace. But then again, selling pearls to Arabs is like trying sell fridges to eskimos: the pearls have got to be really good. Lot 79 is a natural saltwater baroque pearl which is far more valuable than freshwater pearls. I liked seeing the unusual jewels Andre Marcha jewels (Lots 92 & 93) with their writhing forms and strong mix of colours and textures.
